Dr. Barnes is a native of Newellton, Louisiana, a small farming community in Northeast Louisiana. His mother and father owned a Western Auto Store in this community for 50 years. He graduated as the Valedictorian of Newellton High School in 1972 and graduated with honors from Louisiana Tech University in 1976. He was accepted to LSU-Shreveport Medical School entering in 1976 and graduating in 1980. He completed a 3 year Family Practice Residency at the University of Alabama in June of 1983. He served as Co-Chief Resident in 1982-83. He began private practice in July of 1983 in West Monroe also serving as a part-time faculty member at LSU (Conway) during this time. He entered solo practice in the spring of 1987 and moved to his present location in Monroe in October of 1987. He has served as a preceptor for medical students from LSU and for Nurse Practitioner students from Northwestern Louisiana State University. He joined the staff of North Monroe Hospital in 1987 serving in numerous leadership capacities over the years including Chairman of the Dept. of Medicine, Secretary, Vice-Chief of Staff, Chief of Staff, and Chairman of the Hospital Board. Upon the purchase of North Monroe by St. Francis Medical Center he was asked to serve as Co-Department of Medicine Chair and on the Executive Committee of the twin campuses, which he did for 2 years. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Practice, Louisiana Academy of Family Practice, Louisiana State Medical Society, and past President of the Ouachita Parish Medical Society.
